Dan’s life was defined by relentless dedication to service. Born May 10, 1971, he was introduced to the fire service at an early age through his father, Ed Sr. At just 20 years old, Dan followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Fairville Volunteer Fire Department on August 8, 1991. From the beginning, Dan’s commitment was clear.
Dan quickly enrolled in programs to become an interior firefighter and, over the years, was driven to learn and grow, including becoming a paramedic. His journey saw him rise through the ranks, earning the title of lieutenant and later training officer, where he had a hand in shaping the next generation of firefighters.
In 2013, Dan became assistant chief, a role he filled with extreme dedication. His outstanding contributions didn’t go unnoticed, earning him the title of Firefighter of the Year in 2013. After earning the trust and respect of his peers, he was elected chief of the department in 2015, where he continued to make a profound impact. But Dan’s humility was evident—after serving as chief, he chose to return to the firefighter role in 2017 and continued to receive recognition, including being named Firefighter of the Year again in 2018. Stepping back to allow others to lead, he continued to serve as assistant chief from 2019 to 2022, before once again choosing to serve in a firefighter capacity in 2023.
On January 21, 2024, Dan responded to a call for a structure fire at a property that held personal significance. Dan’s own family lived there. As the driver of the third truck, Dan did what he had done countless times before—secured the apparatus, immediately directed younger members, and began assisting the second truck with making the hydrant, ensuring a steady water supply.
But that night, something went terribly wrong; Dan experienced a sudden medical emergency. Despite medics just feet away, that night, the Lord called him home.
Dan’s passing was a devastating loss, not only to his family and the fire department, but to the community he served so faithfully. His legacy is one of selfless service, leadership, and sacrifice. He gave everything to help others—whether it was fighting fires, teaching new recruits, building equipment, or providing safety to the community. Dan will be remembered as a cornerstone of the department, a brother in arms, and a family man who gave his all to the people he loved.
His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched—through his work, his leadership, and the values he instilled in those who followed him. Dan’s impact will continue to resonate for generations to come.
