Roll of Honor

Firefighter
Age: 32
Year of Death: 2001

Dennis M. Mulligan

Firefighter Dennis M. Mulligan spent his nearly eight years as a firefighter assigned to Ladder 2‚ Engine 8‚ Battalion 8 in mid-town Manhattan. As a child and teen Dennis spoke of becoming a pediatrician‚ but as he grew into adulthood‚ he realized his true calling was that of Firefighter.

Dennis‚ however‚ did not limit his ambitions while pursuing his chosen career. He also formed a successful trucking business with several of his fellow firefighters and pursued real estate investments with the Ladder 2 gang.

At 32‚ Dennis remained a confirmed bachelor‚ yet he was a family man in every sense of the word‚ leaving behind his parents Edward Mulligan and Mary Frigo‚ a sister‚ Patricia‚ and three brothers‚ Michael‚ Kevin and Brian. Dennis also had five adoring nieces and nephews: Padraig Galligan‚ also his friend; Ciara Galligan‚ Ryan Mulligan‚ Kaitlyn Mulligan‚ and Michael Mulligan. Dennis is also greatly missed by his brother-in-law‚ Padraig Galligan‚ and his sisters-in-law Laura‚ Deirdre and Diana Mulligan.

Dennis was undoubtedly the center of his family’s universe. He was kind‚ beautiful and generous in every way.

His life was rich with love and friendship‚ yet nothing would have prevented his heeding the call to duty on September 11‚ 2001 as he‚ like so many others‚ prepared to go off duty. His essence was that of duty‚ loyalty and service which is the spirit in which he gave his life to save others.

  1. My daughter is completing a school project on 9/11. She was asked to profile a firefighter who lost their life in the attacks. Being a proud Mulligan we searched for a firefighting namesake. We found Dennis. I visited the 9/11 memorial last November and was very moved by it. My uncle Gerard Mulligan served with Dublin Fire Brigade, Ireland for many years.

  2. This being my third year doing the 9/11 stairclimb, I choose Dennis Mulligan to climb for. May his family and friends know that we will NEVER FORGET what he and his 342 other brothers and sisters stood for. I was honored to ring the bell here in Richmond, VA and yell out his name for everyone to honor him.

  3. I am sure I am many years late in commenting on this post, as I don’t see any date on these postings and have been remiss in checking the site. Dennis’ brother-in-law, Padraig Galligan, is a Ballinagh, Ireland native, so, thank you, to Fiona, the niece of Gerard, for his service on the Dublin Fire Brigade. The tradition was honorably continued.

  4. Just completed the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb in Panama City Beach, FL with Dennis’ name card along with me. We climbed 22 floors 6 times (we usually do 5x, but the rest of the firefighters there where not done yet so we did one more round) and we rang the bell as we finished and I read his name aloud. Thank you for allowing me to honor your family member.

  14. The year after it opened, I visited the World Trade Centre Memorial. I live in Ontario, Canada. Being extremely sensitive to my intuition and energy /vibrations around me, it was an extremely upsetting visit. It felt like, to me, what Hell might feel like. The “pools” resembled dropping into a dark bottomless pit. When I approached the wall, I was at S17. Then upset upon seeing a “Mulligan” on the wall, I moved away. I walked kitty-corner to N-29, only to see another “Mulligan”. Trying to rationalize why, I guessed that there must have been several Irish Mulligan firemen lost that day. On September 11, 2020, I learned that there were only two Mulligan’s killed at the World Trade Centre. Today, I will honour Dennis and Peter so that others can remember their names.

  16. Hi Patricia,
Today is September 11, 2021, the 20th Anniversary of that infamous day. While watching the memorial from NYC (I now live in FL), I caught the surname Mulligan mentioned. I was born Catherine Mulligan in Yorkville, Manhattan in 1943. I didn’t know much about my Mulligan ancestors except that my father’s father was also born in NYC and that the family came from Ireland. My daughter really did a lot of research, but just a few years ago, we learned where in Ireland my family came from – Co. Louth. My husband, Raymond, was a NYFD firefighter for over 20 years, mostly in Bedford Stuyvesant. He had retired by 9-11, but after arriving home from a transatlantic cruise, he attended as many as 6 funerals a day.
I’m just wondering if there is any connection between my ancestors and yours. A great grand uncle of mine was Peter Mulligan. My email is [email protected]. My phone number is 941-639-8220. I hope I hear from you sometime.

    – Catherine M Negrycz
  17. For the 20th anniversary, a local non-profit did a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and put up a flag for everyone who died that day. I sponsored a flag and today I picked it up and it was the flag for Dennis M. Mulligan. It is an honor to sponsor a firefighter. Thank you Dennis for your service and sacrifice and thanks to all your brothers and sisters who also gave their lives that day. I will take great care of this flag and honor you always.

  18. Hi Patricia,
I just wanted to let you know you and your family are forever on my heart. Every 9/11 is dedicated to remembering Dennis and his sacrifice, and your families sacrifice. My entire church prayed for you guys this morning. Even though we’ve never met you are special in my heart. Blessings to you Patricia.

  19. I climbed the Red Rocks 9/11 memorial stair climb for Dennis M. Mulligan. I am training to be an EMT and I hope I can provide help to those in need much like Mr. Mulligan. Never Forget

  20. Every September 11, the citizens of Aspen Colorado join together in a solemn ceremony to remember the heroes of 9-11. There is a rose with a name and picture of every fallen firefigher for citizens to take home and cherish. This year, I chose the rose with Dennis Mulligan’s name and picture. Although I never knew him, I will always say his name so he will always be remembered. I am now retired after 30 years of service as a deputy sheriff. Rest in peace, Dennis Mulligan.
