Firefighter Earl Konkle, along with five other Atlanta firefighters were killed instantly during mop up operations at the Jass Manufacturing Company fire when the fire weakened the floor above them, loaded with 150 bales of water-soaked cotton bales, collapsed. Eight other firefighters were severely injured.


This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
