Edward R. Connolly was an 18 year veteran of the department assigned to Ladder 17. While performing suppression operations at a 3 story structure fire‚ a wall of the structure collapsed‚ hitting a tree and causing it and falling debris to strike Connolly and several other firefighters. Connolly sustained fatal injuries while the other firefighters sustained non-life threatening injuries.

There were several structures involved and the weather was very cold with windy conditions.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.

  1. Just finished Leo Stapleton’s “Commish”, where I read about Conolly’s Sacrifice. It takes a different breed to do what firefighters do. Thank you Edward Connolly for your service and sacrifice.
