Roll of Honor

Supervising Fire Marshal
Age: 53
Year of Death: 2024

George E. Snyder Jr.

George E. Snyder Jr. was born September 14, 1970, to Rosanne Snyder and the late George E. Snyder Sr., and was the youngest of four children. George attended St. Denis School, Saunders Trades & Technical High School, and Queens College. He was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. He attained his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter with the FDNY in 2002.

The bravest thing a firefighter can do is take the oath of office. Everything else is in the line of duty, and we are extremely proud of his bravery, dedication, and sacrifice.

George was first assigned to Engine 36 in Harlem and then transferred to Engine 47 in Morningside Heights. George became a fire marshal in 2009 and was promoted to supervising fire marshal in 2019. He was assigned to the Special Operations Command, where he headed up the Lithium-Ion Battery Task Force. His work there included investigating lithium-ion battery fires and partnering with other agencies in enforcement. He was cited five times for meritorious acts throughout his 22-year career. “Snyder” was never afraid to lead or take charge. He knew his role and how to handle it. George was always ready with a joke and jab but most importantly a willingness to get the job done.

George had an infectious personality with a larger than life laugh, a contagious smile, and a most giving and generous heart. There wasn’t a person he came in contact with who didn’t feel better after spending time with him. He was devoted to his family and friends, always bringing joy and laughter to others with a true passion for people both on the job and those he served in the community.

To know George was to love him, and life will never be the same without him. His smile could light up a room. His humor and wit only made it brighter.

George leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and service. He accomplished so much in his lifetime, except the wisdom that comes from old age. His absence leaves a void that will never be filled, and his presence will be profoundly missed.

Thank you, George, for being you, the countless memories, and never failing to put a smile on our faces. You will continue to live on in the hearts of all those whose lives you touched, and we will forever remember your love and service.
