Gregg was also a part time farmer- he raised cows and pigs. Each year he had a huge garden and the produce was shared with family‚ friends and neighbors alike. He hunted and loved fishing and boating. He has his wife Joann and two children‚ Gregg and Sarah. He once told his son‚ Find a job you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life. He personified joy…his life was family‚ friends‚ and the fire department.

On Saturday September 16, 2017 I had the honor of climbing in the 911 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin for Gregg. I have the badge they gave me with his picture on it above my computer screen in my office, along with the other 4 I climbed for in previous years. Doing the stair climb seems like a small task compared to the ultimate sacrifice that you made on that dark day. Rest in Peace Brother.

I wanted to share something about Lt Gregg Atlas and hope this somehow finds his family. My school participated in a 9/11 Stair Climb Challenge to honor the Fallen Heroes of 9/11. One of my middle school students proudly climbed 1,980 steps in honor of Lt Gregg Atlas. Students climbed virtually due to Covid so he was on a Mass Google Meet with many other students climbing. He wrote Lt. Gregg Altas name in the chat and announced his name twice throughout the day during 2 separate classes (virtually). I heard so many names throughout the day (as 807 students climbed for so many heroes) but Lt Gregg Atlas name jumped out at me for some reason. THEN, at the end of the day, my Vice principal returned his honoree badge to me and low and behold, it was Lt Gregg Atlas once again. Out of ALL the badges and ALL the heroes, for some reason Lt Gregg Atlas was reaching out to me and I can’t get him out of my head. I climbed proudly in honor of Joseph R. Rivelli Jr, Ladder 25 this year but will climb next year for Lt Gregg Atlas. I want his family to know that he was truly honored for his sacrifice and appreciated by me, my student, and my VP. I didn’t even know Lt Gregg Atlas but he is forever special to me now – I WILL NEVER FORGET!

One year out of college living with my best friend, Shanna. In the days and weeks after 9/11, Shanna and I baked dozens of cookies for the firefighters. They were the heroes of our city. Shanna passed last year due to cancer from 9/11. Today was meaningful to me on so many levels. Thank you to the Atlas family and God bless.
