James Alan ‘Jim’ Burnett‚ 51‚ a district forester and 18-year member of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-Forestry Services‚ died on August 11‚ 2000‚ of burns suffered while fighting a Wyoming wildfire. Burnett received a Forest Stewardship Planner of the Year award in 1998 and was Oklahoma Forester of the Year in 2000.

My grandfather I never got to meet. I honestly never thought much of it. A few days ago I watched a movie titled “Only the Brave” (2017), and I feel like me seeing that movie by myself in my room was meant to happen. I have heard stories about Jim but once again, never thought much of him. After seeing that movie, I recalled those stories I’ve been told my hole life and now understand what happened to him and the significance of it. I am deeply saddened by how I never truly cared about our family’s loss. I mean, he was literally living in nowheresville Arkansas and had the courage to go fight a fire to protect the families of a state across the country. That is a true hero and I will always remember him as one.
