James served five years with Clements Volunteer Fire Department. He also served with Athens‚ AL Rescue Squad and was a local director with the American Red Cross. He spent numerous years as a local Boy Scout Master.

He took care of the local cemetery where he is now buried. He was a retiree with N.A.S.A with over 30 years of service with the last few years worked as a diver in the neutral buoyancy tank where Astronauts trained at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville‚ AL.

James was a devoted husband of 45 years and the father of four boys.
