James Edward Devery, 71, of Mahopac, New York, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022.
James was born to John and Helen Devery on January 22, 1951, in Manhattan, New York, one of five siblings (Patricia, Helen, John, Tommy). James graduated from Roosevelt High School in the Bronx in 1968.
James was a proud member of the FDNY for 25 years. He began his career as a fireman at Engine 18 in Greenwich Village before becoming a fire marshal, working all over New York City. He became a supervising fire marshal in Manhattan prior to his retirement in 2003.
James received numerous medals for his heroic efforts. On September 11, 2001, he was one of the first responders and rescued a civilian from the 51st floor. James was dedicated to the fire department. He loved his work and was truly a selfless, kindhearted man, putting everyone’s needs before his.
In his free time, James enjoyed fishing and was the best “Gampy” to his grandchildren.
James is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia (Gmitter); his son, Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Mary-beth; daughter, June; daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Joseph; and six grandchildren, Kirsten, Willow, Andrew, Addison, Jones, and Ophelia.
He was incredibly loved and will be sorely missed. He will forever be our hero.
