James E. Hunkins

Submitted by his daughter

Jim Hunkins was proud to serve on the Breckenridge Fire Department for over 25 years holding several offices. He was also the volunteer photographer for the department. Jim served in the National Guard‚ was a member of the Wahpeton VFW and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

An avid bowhunter‚ Jim was a member of the Three Rivers Archery Club where an archery award has been named in his memory. Jim and his wife‚ Shirley enjoyed all that the outdoors had to offer. Camping‚ fishing‚ backpacking and cross-country skiing were his favorite past-times. He enjoyed his family and spending time with his three young grandsons.

Jim had many hobbies including photography and woodworking. He had a wood shop in his backyard where many gifts and special pieces of craftsmanship were created. He was a rockhound for many years which evolved into jewelry making. Whatever project Jim worked on‚ one was going to see exquisite work.

Jim is survived by his wife‚ Shirley Hunkins of Breckenridge‚ his mother‚ Blanche Hunkins of Breckenridge‚ daughters‚ Tammy (Benson) Seebach of Minneapolis‚ and Kathy (Fitzner) Diekman of Wahpeton‚ and three grandchildren‚ sisters‚ Janet (Jerry) Czichotzki and Judy (Roger) Harty of Breckenridge.

Jim attended the North Dakota State School of Science and was part owner of Wahpeton Electric when he died.

There are many stories about Jim from his family‚ friends and community members. From flying homemade model airplanes to hunting with the ‘Over the Hill Gang’‚ Jim is missed dearly.
