FDNY Battalion Chief (retired) James Nicholas Costello, 52, of Highlands, New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015.
Jim was born in New York City on April 19, 1963. He was raised in Massapequa, New York, and Sparta, New Jersey. He graduated from Pope John XXIII High School and earned a B.S. in finance from Fairfield University. In 2010, Jim graduated from New York Law School.
In 1986, he joined the Fire Department of New York City. He was assigned to Engine 54/Ladder 4 in Midtown, Manhattan, the same company where his firefighter father served. Jim retired on June 15, 2014, as a battalion chief, after 28 years on the job. He was an avid Giants and Mets fan.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved father, James E. Costello, who passed away on March 13, 2015. He was survived by his mother, Joan Spellman Costello; sisters, Mary Costello, Ann Lazar, and Kathleen Patire (Angelo); and brother, Timothy Costello (Anita). He was the loving uncle of Jacob, Ryan, Kate, and Aiden Lazar and Courtney, Liam, and Declan McHale. He was also survived by his dog, Ferris, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
