Roll of Honor

Firefighter
Age: 63
Year of Death: 2022
Year Honored:

James Walsh

With deep sorrow and immense pride, we honor the life and legacy of our beloved brother, James “Jimmy” Walsh, who passed away on March 31, 2022, after meeting a devastating 9/11-related illness head-on, with the same grit, discipline, and bravery that defined his life.

A man of many talents, he was an FDNY firefighter, master carpenter, railroad conductor, and craftsman. But most of all, he was a protector, provider, and a rock for his family and community.

Jimmy served the City of New York as a firefighter from 1983 to 2003, courageously responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center and participating in the rescue and recovery operations. He bore the physical toll of his service with resilience and faith, enduring surgeries on his lungs, spine, and leg as cancer took hold of his body. Through it all, Jimmy never wavered in his commitment to helping others. He offered strength, guidance, and his unforgettable laugh, even during his most difficult moments.

Known for his unmatched attention to detail, Jimmy built everything with excellence, from homes to handcrafted furniture. He lived modestly, despite his many accomplishments, and found joy in fishing, crabbing, clamming, and cooking his signature healthy Italian meals.

Jimmy lived by his values—faith, integrity, discipline, and loyalty. He was a loving son, nephew, cousin, uncle, brother, and friend, always willing to step in and make sure everyone was taken
care of. His mother, Ann Marie Esposito, who passed away just five months before him, raised Jimmy and his siblings with exceptional dedication after the early loss of his father, embracing
the role of both mother and father, while instilling her strength, resiliency, honor, faith, integrity, ethics, diligence, and unconditional love. She was so proud of Jimmy.

Jimmy was known for saying, “You gotta face the challenge, no matter how tough it is.” And he sure did. His no-nonsense approach came from a place of genuine care. He held people accountable because he believed in doing things the right way, the honorable way.

Jimmy Walsh will be remembered for his bravery, his character, and the laughter he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the love he gave, and every memory that brings us both smiles and tears. He was, and forever will be, a true American hero.
