Jared Woodruff Taylor

Pipeman Jared Woodruff Taylor on Engine House 5 died as a result of pleural pneumonia and other complications (fractured rib, punctured lung) that were caused directly by the exposure and accident of a wall collapse from the Winnebago Furniture Company fire on April 27, 1909. Jared was caught under a collapsing wall during the incident, but he continued fighting the fire. After two days of suffering, he was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where he died a few days later. Information was gathered from Fond du Lac’s Forgotten Pipeman by Sally Powers-Albertz.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
