Captain John M. Blackwell II, a 27-year veteran of the New Orleans Fire Department, passed away at the age of 53 on February 24, 2025, just twelve days after being diagnosed with cancer.

Captain Blackwell, whose life was defined by courage, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to serving others, joined the NOFD in 1998. He responded to countless fires, medicals, rescues, and other incidents over his 27 years of service. Some notable incidents included Hurricane Katrina, the Hard Rock Hotel collapse, for which he was awarded a Medal of Commendation, the seven-alarm fire at a historic mansion on St. Charles Avenue, the five-alarm fire at the Hubig’s Pie facility, and countless more. He held over 50 certifications in firefighting, HAZMAT, response to terrorism and CBRNE incidents, passenger train emergency response/railroad incidents, structural collapse, and other rescue certifications including extrications, rope, confined space, and water rescue. He also served on the Louisiana USAR Team LA-Task Force 1, and the NOFD’s Special Event Tactical Team.

Before joining the NOFD, he served in the Army National Guard and spent some time as a commercial diver. He was also respected in the Louisiana bodybuilding community. Bodybuilding was a reflection of his discipline, his relentless drive, and his commitment to being the best version of himself.

At the center of everything was his family. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His wife, Denise, was more than just a life companion to him; she was his best friend and favorite person to spend time with. He was intensely proud of his sons, Garrett and John, and poured out affection on his grandchildren, Levi, Lucy, and Enola.

Captain Blackwell was a brother to his colleagues and a living legend in the fire service. He fearlessly went into the buildings that others hesitated to enter. His passion for the job was fueled by an unshakable sense of duty, confidence, and grit, and a deep love for the craft of firefighting. He had a unique ability to instill confidence and skill in everyone he encountered, shaping them to be not just better firefighters but better people.

His legacy lives on in his family, in the people he mentored, in the firefighters who had the privilege of serving with him, and in every life that he touched along the way.
