John Owens and Winston West were rushing to respond to a fire alarm when their truck collided with a sedan. Both men, volunteers, were thrown from the truck and died. Owens had been an electrician with the City of Mesa, and West was known to his friends at the Fire Department as Owens’ “right-hand man.”

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.

  1. John was a courageous, brave and honorable self made man, who loved his family. I have missed you always, from that fateful day, even though I was only nine years old. Rest In Peace and always know you were loved.
