Johnny A. Goines

Johnny A. Goines was born on July 18, 1955, and spent his life serving others through his work, his community involvement, and his dedication to the fire service. A proud native of eastern North Carolina, Johnny graduated from Dixon High School in Holly Ridge, North Carolina, as part of the Class of 1974. From an early age, Johnny was known for his strong work ethic, his willingness to help others, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Johnny built a lifelong career as an auto mechanic, a trade that allowed him to combine his technical skill with his natural ability to solve problems. He later dedicated 25 years of service to UPS, where he became a respected employee and leader among his coworkers. During his time there, he served as a union shop steward for his Teamsters shop, a role that reflected Johnny’s lifelong commitment to standing up for others. He was never afraid to speak his mind, especially when it meant defending those who needed a voice.

Johnny and his beloved wife, Deborah, built a strong and loving family together. They raised two children and were proud grandparents to four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Family meant everything to Johnny, and he took great pride in being present for the people he loved.

Deeply connected to his community, Johnny spent most of his life in the small community of Verona, just south of Jacksonville, North Carolina. He invested in the area not only through relationships but also through entrepreneurship, owning several small businesses including rental properties and a landscaping company.

Perhaps Johnny’s most meaningful service came through his decades of volunteering with the Verona Volunteer Fire Department. Beginning in his twenties, he answered the call to protect his neighbors and friends whenever they needed help. His commitment reflected his deep love for his community and his belief in helping others without hesitation.

Johnny never met a stranger. Whether in the firehouse, at work, or around town, he was always ready to strike up a conversation and make someone feel welcome. His life was defined by service, hard work, and loyalty—to his family, his coworkers, and the community he loved.

Johnny A. Goines leaves behind a legacy of dedication, courage, and compassion that will be remembered by all who knew him.
