Year Honored:

Joseph A. Morstatt

Joseph A. Morstatt began his career with the Fire Department of New York on September 5, 1981, and proudly served until his retirement on June 30, 2002. Joseph proved to be a dedicated and loyal firefighter throughout his career and beyond.

Joseph’s career is most proudly remembered in his service to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center immediately following the collapse of the towers on September 11, 2001. He worked tirelessly alongside his fellow firefighters and other volunteers for months following the terrorist attacks.

After his retirement, his dedication to helping others did not end. Jospeh helped to create the Friends and Family Freedom Fund, which primarily serves the needs of those injured during military service, like Sergeant Eddie Ryan. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, the Emerald Society, and the FDNY Fire Riders Motorcycle Club. If someone needed something, Joseph was there to lend a hand. He was an inspiration to both of his sons, who have followed in this footsteps to become firefighters with the FDNY just like their father.

When he was not serving others or riding his Harley, Joseph could be found spending as much time as possible with his family.
