Joseph G. Toolis

Firefighter Joseph G. Toolis, 43, a 16-year member of the Cleveland Division of Fire assigned to Ladder 2, died in a dust explosion during a four-alarm fire at a metal processing plant. On his days off, he worked for a local landscaping company. He is survived by his wife and five children: John, Joseph, Kathy, Robert, and Thomas. His brother, Jack, was also a member of the fire department.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
