Born April 1, 1958, in Bayshore, New York, Kevin was the fourth son of eight born to John J. and Eleanor Dunn. He grew up in the close-knit community of Williston Park, New York, with his siblings, the late Kathleen Dugan Dunn, Peter, John “Jack,” the late Richard “Rick”, Steven, James, and the late Marie Chiafolo Dunn.
Kevin attended grade school at St. Aidan’s Parish until eighth grade and graduated from Herricks High School in 1976.
Kevin was appointed as a firefighter on April 15, 1989, and was promoted to lieutenant on February 2, 2002.
In May 2005, he was stricken with Guillain-Barré Syndrome that left him partially paralyzed in his upper right shoulder. Due to those complications, he retired on March 1, 2008, at the age of 50, just shy of 20 years service in the FDNY. He regretted having to retire, as he loved his job.
Kevin was such a huge part of his community! He coached Little League, CYO soccer, basketball, and football.
Kevin also was a member of the Herricks High School Board of Education and served as trustee with the Village of Williston Park.
He was very athletic and ran several Long Island Half Marathons. Golf was his game!
He was a wonderful dad to his four sons, Matthew, Thomas, John, and Daniel, instilling in them the same sense of integrity, loyalty, and heart.
Kevin loved Montauk and the mountains and his summer home in Flanders, New York.
He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Kevin worked on the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001, and for several months afterwards.
In March 2016, Kevin was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma, a 9/11-related cancer, and passed away at home surrounded by his family on May 6, 2020.
He is deeply missed every day!
