Lester Hillis

Fire engineer Lester Hillis was responding to an automobile accident when the fire truck in which he was riding was hit by a car although the truck was using its lights and sirens. The fire truck overturned, and Hillis died from the injuries he sustained. It was the first fatality suffered by the Glendale Fire Department.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
