Martin J. Egan‚ Jr. was a 36-year old New York City Fire Department Captain. He was very proud to be a firefighter and often called it the greatest job in the world. He was married for 8 years to his wife Diane. He had a 6-year old son and a 4-year old daughter. Being a father to his two young children was his greatest accomplishment and joy. He was a wonderful husband and father who was happiest spending time with his family.
His many interests included running (he ran in most local races‚ including the 2000 New York City Marathon)‚ weight lifting‚ skiing‚ and renovating his 90-year old home.
He will never be forgotten and is truly missed by his many family members and friends.

I participated in a tower challenge memorial step walk today (9/11/2018) and was given a wristband with your name on it, I found strength in your name which gave me the ability to complete the challenge. Never forget 9/11
– RandyI participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb that was held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay Wisconsin. The Stair Climb releases 343 participants at a time, each carrying a badge with one of the 9/11 fallen firefighters. I had the privilege to carry the badge of Martin J. Egan, Jr., Captain of Ladder 118. As I rang the bell and stated Martin’s name out loud, I sent caring thoughts to his family.

On 9/11 this year and last year I had the privilege to wear the badge of Captain Martin J. Egan Jr. on the left pocket of my fireman’s coat. Hi Capt. Egan, I know you’re not here to witness this day but it’s already been 20 years since 9/11. I was just an eighth grader in Math class when I heard the horrific news. Today, fast forward 20 years later, I serve in the U.S. Coast Guard here in NYC! I ran a 5 K in your remembrance and I have a card with your name on it that was given to me. – Ensign K. Pringle, U.S.Coast GuardIt’s Sept. 10, 2022 in Oklahoma, and I am preparing to do the memorial stair climb in Oklahoma City. This year, I was given Captain Egan’s name to climb for. I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT/chaplain on our small town department, and I just want to share what an honor it is to climb for Captain Egan. I also have a son and daughter, and my wife and I celebrated our 9 year anniversary this last June. So, I can’t imagine how hard it was to lose him.
So, all the way from Oklahoma, I just want to say thank you, and let you know that his sacrifice and your sacrifice as a family is still being honored.
