Martin K. Smith

Martin Kyle Smith was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, to the late Joseph Lee and Delma Smith on September 15, 1958. Marty began a career at Funks Manufacturing John Deere in Coffeyville, Kansas, from which he later retired. He began his tenure at the Dearing Fire Department as a junior firefighter when he was just 16 years of age. Marty dedicated almost 50 years serving Montgomery County and was a fire chief at the time of his death.

Marty leaves behind his daughter, Heather Smith, and granddaughter, Chazlin Smith.

Marty loved cars and tinkering. He could fix just about anything. Marty loved listening to music, the louder the better. He loved to sing and play the drums. The 4th of July was something he looked forward to every year. The volunteer firemen would lip sync to bands from the early days to today’s music. One of their favorite acts was KISS, with Marty dressing up as Gene Simmons, and many other bands, dressing up in full costume. He had a full stage built right on his property with concert lighting and every instrument you can imagine. They planned this for months every year! Halfway through the show, the firemen would go down to the end of Marty’s pasture and set off a beautiful display of fireworks for the community.

No matter what time of day or night, regardless of what Marty was doing, whether it was a holiday or dinner time, rain or shine, if his pager went off, he was out the door. Marty unselfishly volunteered and sacrificed his life serving the community through the fire service.

Marty departed this earth doing what he truly loved. He leaves behind family, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.
