Michael Higgins, a longtime resident of Pearl River, New York, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022. He was 64.
Born on October 16, 1957, in Deer Park, Long Island, Michael was the second eldest of five siblings—Anne Marie Ferry, John Higgins, Eileen Hands, and Keith Higgins. He spent his early years on Long Island, attending Seton Hall High School for three years and graduating from Deer Park High School in 1975. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in American history from Manhattan College in 1980.
Michael proudly served as a firefighter for the City of New York from 1982 until his retirement in 2011. He began his career in the South Bronx at Ladder 42 and later moved on to Ladder 19, where he eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant. His decades of service were marked by bravery, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his community.
Michael lived in the Bronx from 1986 to 1989 before settling in Pearl River, where he spent the past 30 years. In addition to his firefighting career, he ran his own roofing company and was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH). Known for his generosity, sense of humor, and deep compassion, Michael was always quick to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear.
In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, carpentry, and reading about U.S. history.
Michael is survived by his beloved children, Chris and Kerry, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members who will miss him deeply. He will be remembered for his selfless nature, sweet soul, and ability to make others laugh with his quick wit. He embodied brotherhood and the heart of the FDNY throughout his daily life.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and integrity. Michael was a cherished father, devoted brother, loyal friend, and respected firefighter. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
