Michael Thomas Costa, 69, of Rockaway Park, New York, died on June 3, 2023. He was born in Brooklyn but grew up in Rockaway Beach, where he was loved by many.
As a young man, Michael proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy, serving on the Aircraft Carrier USS Roosevelt.
Michael went on to serve his community as a proud member of the New York City Fire Department in the “Big House,” Engine 328, in Far Rockaway, New York.
Michael died of 9/11-related illnesses and was honored with a line-of-duty funeral on June 7, 2023, at Saint Virgilius Roman Catholic Church in Broad Channel, New York, where he had owned a home with his late wife, Christine, and raised his two children.
Michael is survived by his children, Michael Thomas Costa and Amanda Patricia Costa; his father, Joseph Costa (Veronica); his mother-in-law, Patricia Ciaccio; younger brother, retired FDNY Lieutenant Thomas Costa (Patricia); sisters-in-law, Carol Irizarry (Mike) and Patricia Ruggiero (Gregory); brother-in-law, Louis Oldenbuttel (Patricia); his nieces and nephews, FDNY Lieutenant Joseph Costa (Kimberly), Thomas Costa (Lilith), Veronica Olivo (Ulisses), Valerie Costa, Kathryn Taylor (Jared), Matthew Costa, Jennifer O’Donoghue (Peter), Emily Riskin (Josh), and Christina Connone (Vincent); and many great nieces and nephews and loving cousins.
Michael was predeceased by his wife, Christine (nee Oldenbuttel); his mother, Veronica (nee Skelly); and his older brother, Ralph Costa (Judith).
