Roll of Honor

Captain
Age: 44
Year of Death: 2001

Patrick J. Waters

My husband‚ Captain Patrick J. Waters was much loved by our two boys‚ Christopher and Daniel‚ and myself. He was a terrific husband‚ outstanding father‚ good friend to many‚ dedicated basketball and hockey coach and a serious firefighter.

He gave up being an internal auditor to pursue his dream — FDNY. While he rose up in the ranks‚ he was always a teacher‚ always a friend and never forgot where he started from. Being part of the brotherhood of the Fire Department of the City of New York was as important to him as his family. He was always willing to step up‚ whether it was in our sons’ school as the Fundraising Director and PTA President‚ cleaning up the church basement‚ being a coach or breaking in a new probie.

He loved working as a firefighter in Engine 217‚ Ladder 108 and as a Lieutenant in Ladder 106 and Ladder 124. He worked very hard to become a member of the Special Operations Command and worked as a Lieutenant and then as Captain in all the Rescues‚ Squads and Marine companies and was in command of Haz-Mat 1 on September 11‚ 2001.

He always had a cup of coffee‚ he always made me laugh and he loved our boys wholeheartedly. We will love him Always and Forever.

– Janice Waters

  1. Recently oldest daughter and I visited St. John Catholic cemetery Section 35 during a quick visit to NYC from TX. My other daughter and granddaughter visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum with me and I stopped in front of several tributes telling about fire, police and rescue personnel who died that terrible day. For some reason I paused in front of a photo ID and saw the name Patrick Waters, Cpt, FDNY.
Two days after reading about Cpt. Waters, I saw a headstone with the same name and FDNY logo close to that of my grandmother and both parents. If I am correct in assuming your husband is buried there, I wish to convey my deepest sympathy to you and your sons. I am sure he was a very loving husband and father and one of the many heroes that day. God bless you.

  3. Yesterday I participated in a 9/11 memorial stair climb at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I had the honor of climbing 110 flights of stairs in Patrick’s memory. I wore his picture over my heart and have it proudly displayed in my home.

I’m so happy to have been able to read a little more about him and his family. I am proud to have walked for such a wonderful sounding man!

  4. On Saturday I had the honor of climbing in the 9/11 memorial stair climb in Green Bay, Wisconsin in memory of your husband Patrick. He sounds like an outstanding father, husband and member of your community. While I was climbing the 110 flights, stopping at flight 78 to ring the bell in his honor, I struggled. My body was becoming fatigued and I found myself wanting to stop to rest. However the thought of your family member not having the option to stop and rest that day pushed me to continue on. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your boys and the rest of your family and friends.

    God bless you all.

  5. Janice – I am a 1974 graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School and thus a classmate of Pat’s. I was deeply saddened when I learned of his loss on 9/11. At our 40th Molloy reunion a couple of years ago one of our classmates brought a young man from one of the later graduating classes over to meet us Class of ’74 folks. That young man was yours and Pat’s son. I felt uplifted having met your son, as he seemed to be so young, alive and upbeat. He was extremely polite to all of us and seemed happy to meet us all. To me it meant that, despite Pat’s supreme sacrifice, he lives on in the lives of his family members. By your son’s presence it meant that Pat was there as well with his classmates. I pray that your family is well, and please know that I frequently think of Pat, as I am sure so many others do.

  6. Today, I will be participating in the 9/11 memorial climb at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and will be wearing a picture of Patrick. We will not forget the service he and his family, and all of the others involved with the FDNY, have contributed to the City of New York and the rest of the nation.

They climbed for all of us, and today we will climb for all of them.

    – Derrick

  10. Today I had the honor to have Patrick pinned to my chest while I climbed 110 stories in honor and memorial of those that sacrificed their lives due to the horrible events that took place on 9/11. I am a NYC native and witnessed firsthand firefighters, police officers and first responders work diligently to help save as many lives as they could. I joined the Army after I graduated the following year. Patrick was my guardian angel and his courage will never be forgotten.

  11. I was honored to be a part of the stair climb in Greenville SC I chose Captain Patrick J Waters. I couldn’t help thinking about all the families on that dreadful day. Captain Waters you will not be forgotten as long as I can continue along with all the other public safety individuals that climbed. RIP

    – Jean Calbetzor
  12. Your husband was an inspiration for my step-father Lieutenant Joe Snow, who is now retired from firefighting. When I go to NYC I find Patrick’s name and touch it in honor of both men. Thinking of you and your family as 9-11 comes again.

    – Brooke Moulton
  13. Tomorrow on the 20th anniversary of your flight of stairs to heaven, I run in Coeur d’Alene Idaho, in honor of you and your family. May they know that we see them, we have not forgotten, we see you, your sacrifices. Sending up prayers that your family will rest in Jesus’ arms on 9/11 and beyond until one distant day in the future when they return home to be with God and you.

    – Chrysta Stock
  14. Today I climbed 110 flights in a 9/11 memorial climb. I was honored to climb for Captain Patrick J. Waters. It still feels unreal. It still feels like yesterday. We are so blessed to learn about each one of these brave selfless heroes. Upon arriving home, I placed the 20 year memorial sticker on the back of Captain Waters tag and hung it in my workout room, so every day I’m reminded to be grateful, be selfless, help others, and give my all. God Bless you all and may your husband never be forgotten.
