Richard D. Richardson passed away peacefully on January 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on January 16, 1966, to Earl and Karen (Kendle) Richardson in Steubenville, Ohio. Rich graduated from Buckeye North High School and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Rich became a volunteer firefighter for the town of Brilliant, Ohio, in 1980 at the age of fourteen. He joined the Columbus (Ohio) Division of Fire on July 25, 1988. He was promoted to the ranks of lieutenant, captain and battalion chief. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Distinguished Service Award, Fire Service Award of Merit, EMS Award of Merit, and the Battalion Chief’s Commendation. He was dedicated to serving the citizens of Columbus for over 34 years, ending his career serving Battalion 5 on the city’s west side. At the time of his passing, he was six months from retiring.
His two sons followed in their father’s footsteps. Michael is a lieutenant, and Matthew is a firefighter for the Columbus (Ohio) Division of Fire. His two daughters have followed in careers of service as well. Megan is a nurse, and Madeline is a social worker.
He was the loving husband of Patti for nearly 34 years, the devoted father to Michael (Taylor), Matthew (Shannon), Megan (Jake), and Madeline, and the loving grandfather of four.
He was a faithful and devout member of St Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Men’s Club, Men’s Bible Study, Faith Formation, and served as a volunteer in various ministries.
Rich faced his health challenges with unwavering faith, strength, dignity, and grace. He remained an inspiration to those who knew and loved him.
He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, a brother to many, and a friend to all. We miss his laughter, kindness, cheerful personality, optimism, and his presence tremendously.
