Robert C. Brannon‚ 43‚ a 21-year career lieutenant with the Bluefield Fire Department‚ suffered a heart attack while fighting a house fire and died eight days later on May 4‚ 2000. He led an effort by city firefighters to erect a memorial to a Bluefield fireman who died in the line of duty in 1926. Robby Brannon was one of the finest men I have ever known. I met him when we were kids in school, in 1969. We remained friends into adulthood and I visited with him the evening before his heart attack. He was a great friend, a husband, a father, brother and devoted to his church and community. He is missed and always remembered.
