Fire Chief Robert Pitt was a member of the Spring Valley Hook & Ladder Company, when he lost his life in the line-of-duty on December 5, 1964. He was at a church dinner when the alarm sounded and was one of the first firefighters on the scene. More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze that started on the second floor of an apartment complex. He was named a hero fireman, after saving the lives of two fellow firefighter. Robert Pitt Drive was dedicated to his legacy.
From his daughter: This is my Dad. A former fire chief, the Assistant Postmaster, who was always available to help others. He was at a church dinner across the street from his beloved fire department when his final call rang. He saved 2 firemen and refused help until they were treated first. He will forever be my hero.
