Roger Randolph “Randy” Askin Jr. was born on May 10, 1964. He joined the Air Force after high school and was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, serving for eight years and achieving the rank of sergeant. This is where his love of hunting deer, skiing in Big Sky Country, and fishing began.
He joined the Covington Fire Department in Kentucky in 1990, starting as an EMT before being promoted to engineer and then lieutenant. He retired in 2008.
In 2009, he was inducted into the Ludlow High School Hall of Fame for cross country.
After retiring from the fire department, he taught first aid and CPR for five years at Gateway Community and Technical College.
He died of cancer on February 12, 2023. He leaves behind two children, Blake Askin and Emily Heckman, and two grandchildren.
