Thomas E. ‘Tom’ Prendergast‚ 56‚ a 31-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department‚ died on August 4‚ 1998 after suffering a heart attack on July 23‚ 1998 while fighting a structure fire. For 18 years‚ he had performed volunteer work at a home for the physically and mentally challenged children and young adults.
