Firefighter Thomas Graves, age 31, of the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department died in a building collapse as a result of gas explosion. He received many awards during his years as a career firefighter. Firefighter Graves previously volunteered at the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department, Station 28, from 1966 until he was hired as a career firefighter in 1973.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
