Thomas M. McNamara

Thomas Michael McNamara was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on January 18, 1956, one of five children. Tom’s passion for the fire service came naturally, as his father was a firefighter in their hometown. The family relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where Tom graduated from high school, earned a degree in fire science, and began his career in the fire service. He started at Drexel Heights while testing for his dream job with the Tucson Fire Department (TFD).

Tom was thrilled when he learned he was #1 on the new hire list, and his duty with TFD began on December 3, 1979. His career spanned over 30 years, including roles as a firefighter, captain, training captain, technical rescue, and EC. Tom also enjoyed teaching fire science classes at Pima Community College and was a certified driver training instructor. He was passionate about the fire service and loved sharing his knowledge with others.

Tom retired from TFD in January 2010 and became a senior advisor for Rio Rico Fire. His fire service career ended with his cancer diagnosis in March 2017. It was treated but reappeared in December 2019. Tom fought valiantly, but the cancer prevailed. Tom’s cause of death was lung cancer related to on-the-job exposures.

Tom’s greatest loves were family and friends. He was a dedicated, loving family man, leaving behind his wife of nearly 40 years, Kathi McNamara; two sons, Michael and Trevor (Amelia); five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Tom loved to travel. He and Kathi logged thousands of RV miles in the US and many more in the air and on the water. Tom loved the water and enjoyed teaching the kids and grandchildren to swim, ski, and fish.

Tom was a fabulous country dance partner, which was no small feat (size 13). At 6′ 5″ with those two big left feet, it was a true labor of love. Dancing became a special connection for Tom and Kathi, helping them navigate life’s challenges. His much-loved last fur baby was a dachshund named Garth (yes, as in Brooks). Tom always had a way with babies, kids, dogs, and Kathi.

Tom was involved in many volunteer activities. His last love was The Last Alarm Foundation, a group of retirees who refurbished an old firetruck for the purpose of taking fallen firefighters on their last ride. Tom embraced the mission and drove countless southern Arizona firefighters to their final resting place. He was honored to be a part of The Last Alarm Foundation, and knowing that he too would have his last ride on the much-loved truck brought him comfort.

Until we meet again, my love, some beach somewhere. You are sorely missed and fondly remembered by so many.
