Firefighter William M. Hughes, age 63, of the Fire Department City of New York – Ladder 123, died on September 16, 2022, from illness related to response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
Bill lived a life in service to others, both in his work as an FDNY firefighter and in his everyday interactions with family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers. Always there to lend a hand, Bill’s generosity was habitual. He planned his days around who he could help. Bill was smart in every way a person could be smart, full of sharp wit, endearing nostalgia, and a willingness to be goofy. His boundless energy and strength will be remembered by all.
A resident of Long Beach, New York, he was survived by his adored wife of 27 years, Sheryl, and their feisty dachshund, Doxie. He was the beloved son of John and Claire Hughes, beloved brother of John and Carol Hughes, dear uncle of Lauren and Alex Temple and Valerie and Daniel Hayden, and beloved great-uncle to Susannah, David, Cameron, and Lily.
