Scholarship Recipient

Rebecca Townes

Major: Sports Management
Academic Scholarship Years:
Daughter of
Rebecca Townes

Rebecca’s goal is to become a sports anchor for ESPN, and she would like to eventually have her own talk show. Rebecca says that financial hardship has been an issue for her family, and she and her mother both work several jobs to help with bills. Rebecca’s brother has health issues that have resulted in frequent hospitalization, and Rebecca wants to be as self-sufficient as possible. She will be the first in her family to receive a master’s degree.

Rebecca is a member of the women’s basketball team at the University of New Haven, through which she has done fundraisers for the Make a Wish Foundation. She is also involved with the Caribbean Student Association Fashion Show.

Reference Catherine Lia says that Rebecca is driven and goal oriented as an athlete and scholar. Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kim Odindo echoes these sentiments, describing Rebecca’s leadership and excellence in the classroom and on the court.

Rebecca’s previous scholarships were made possible with support from
Motorola Solutions Foundation, ICMA-RC, and the MissionSquare Retirement Memorial Scholarship Fund.
