Firefighter Francis Haher was the first City of Binghamton firefighter killed in the line of duty. Firefighter Haher was fighting a large barn fire at 21 Warren St. A hose line was in the building hitting the fire when suddenly a large beam fell, broke and released a huge pile of wet hay. The weight of the beam and hay killed him. He was 23 years old.
This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
