John “JR” Gaudet

John “JR” Gaudet, a career firefighter in Binghamton, New York, gave his life in the line of duty on February 12, 2025, when a wall collapsed at a building fire. John was a loving husband and an amazing father to three young children. Born on May 19, 1984, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, he spent the rest of his life dedicated to the community he was raised in.

John “JR” Gaudet attended Binghamton High School, graduating in 2002. He went on to Binghamton University, where he played Division I lacrosse in the 2003–2004 seasons before transferring to SUNY Cortland to play lacrosse in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. JR was a left-handed attackman, known for his faceoff skill and relentlessness on the field. The Red Dragons finished as Division III national runners-up in both of Gaudet’s seasons with the program.

John’s work ethic and compassion were shown in all aspects of his life. He was committed to making a better community for our kids. He coached many local youth sports teams, including Binghamton, Seton, and Windsor School District lacrosse teams. He also poured his heart into coaching his eldest son Charlie’s sports teams, including Binghamton youth football, basketball, and lacrosse.

All John ever wanted was to be a great husband, father, and firefighter. The Binghamton Fire Department stated it perfectly–“JR embodied what it means to be a firefighter—fearless, dedicated, and always putting others before himself. His infectious smile, unwavering positivity, and relentless work ethic made him a brother to all who had the honor of serving alongside him. He was the kind of firefighter you could always count on, the one who would have your back no matter the situation.”

John “JR” Gaudet leaves behind a great legacy and touched every life he encountered. May we all strive to be a little more like JR every day.
