Firefighter Joseph Muggleton was killed fighting a fire at Hayes Boat house. This was located at the corner of Hawley Street and Emerson Place on the Susquehanna River. He was killed when the boat house collapsed on him and several other firefighters. He was 30 years old.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
